pipeline-secrecy-action.pngA Michigan House bill that would shield oil and gas companies from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was introduced in Michigan in May of 2015. At that time, the bill was not able to gain traction to pass out of the House Committee on Oversight and Ethics. Now, the bill has been moved into the House Natural Resources Committee which may be more likely to move it to the full House for a vote.

"This bill reeks of being a wet kiss to companies like Enbridge." - Electablog

Now is the time to work against HB 4540 before it has a chance to be voted on by the Republican legislature. When it comes to the safety and security of the Great Lakes and our local communities, we need more transparency, not less.

On the face of it, the bill aims to "protect energy infrastructure from terrorism" among other things. But what it really does it provide a shroud of secrecy for pipeline companies like Enbridge from having to share information with the public. This would further protect Enbridge from public scrutiny about the safety (or danger posed by) Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac, and would even prevent private property owners from finding out more about pipelines that cross their private property.

We need more transparency regarding all of Michigan's oil pipelines, not less. Take action today.
