UPDATE: Tuesday, December 11, 12:15 PM - Here are the results of the House vote for SB 1197 (74-34). Big money and greed win today. But the fight continues. Leaving a pipeline in the Great Lakes for 10 or more years is not an option. Not on our watch. Thanks for all that called and emailed Representatives.

Proposed Talking Points

State your name and where you live.

Please vote no on SB 1197, the bill authorizing an oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. My specific concerns include:

  • The current Line 5 pipeline must be shut down as soon as possible. SB 1197 would allow the existing Line 5 pipeline to remain in the open waters of the Great Lakes for at least another decade.
  • Any tunnel should be taxed as private property. This bill would designate the utility tunnel as public property, which risks removing from the tax rolls the over $500,000 of private investment for a private corporation.
  • No state funds for the tunnel. This tunnel proposal serves primarily a private purpose, the State of Michigan should not spend our tax dollars to help a private company build, maintain, permit, or litigate this proposed tunnel.

Remember to thank them for their time!

Called Lee Chatfield, got an assistant, voiced my objections, the assistant was very polite but I didn’t make the call until 1:35 PM, probably too late.

The second call to Sara Cambensey went to voicemail, left a message. Again 1:35 (approx).

Whew! Just called every Rep in MI. even though I live in Washington state. As a retired Union Pipefitter/welder, I do not support oil, gas, coal extraction. Nor the nuclear option even though I have worked with brothers and sisters still working in these fields. Support BioMass Conversion. Put an end to sewage treatment plants, animal waste, landfills. Put timber families to work clearing forests of debris. Cleaning our oceans, lakes and rivers of invasive plants. Let’s make our own ORGANIC fuel!

I called and rep Inman said he’s voting no, so I thanked him. Called and left a message with Lucido since it sounds like he’s on the fence; pushed the idea that an environmental catastrophe would be devastating to tourism economy of northern MI, and that current deal violates Native American rights.

I reminded Inman that this is not only a danger to our water for life, it is a danger to our economics .

And it is racism because it violates treaty rights of Native Americans, and also the poor as the failing will hurt them the most.

Besides the technical reasons to vote no, I said that Michiganders are stressed and tired of our divisive, hate-filled state government, and we need to work this out in January with something most voters can agree on; maybe a voter referendum even. Please…no more divisive politics in Lansing! Families and friends are being torn apart. It has to STOP.
