TAKE ACTION

Sign the Petition to ask President Biden to protect the Great Lakes and climate from the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline.

Enbridge’s Line 5 oil pipeline threatens the Great Lakes and surrounding states. Enbridge is trying to block action by Michigan’s governor to protect us from an outdated and dangerous oil pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.

SIGN THE PETITION

Please sign the petition asking President Biden to support Gov. Whitmer’s action to decommission the Line 5 oil pipeline before it ruptures.

Dear President Biden:

We are reaching out to share with you our support for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to protect the Great Lakes by acting to decommission Enbridge’s Line 5 oil pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac.

These 68-year-old pipelines present a clear and present danger to the Great Lakes. The twin pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac that put 20 percent of the world’s fresh surface water and the region’s economy at risk should never have been allowed to be there and in fact, were never subject to modern-day environmental laws and reviews.

...petition continues below.

The State of Michigan, as owner and trustee, has a legal responsibility to manage the public-owned bottomlands where Line 5 is located and protect the Great Lakes. Line 5 has spilled at least 33 times and 1.1 million gallons of oil along its length since 1968. Under the best of circumstances, only 30% of a spill in the Straits of Mackinac would be recovered. 1.5 million jobs and $62 billion in wages are directly connected to the Great Lakes. A pipeline rupture could impact up to 400 miles of shoreline

Enbridge’s ongoing and incurable violations of its 1953 easement with the state prompted Gov. Whitmer to revoke the easement to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill. Gov. Whitmer has ordered the removal of these dangerous pipelines by May 2021, but Enbridge, a Canadian-based oil transport giant, is attempting to delay and ultimately defeat the governor’s actions.

At the heart of this dispute is the sovereign authority and title of U.S. states to protect their water resources for the benefit of their citizens under the perpetual public trust and equal footing doctrines.

Your work to make America the world’s “clean energy superpower” and protecting world-class natural and economic resources like the Great Lakes has tremendous support in the Great Lakes State of Michigan. We urge you to support Gov. Whitmer’s action on the Line 5 pipelines.

Every day I see the beauty and the creative genius of our creator. My drive to work, all the various colors of green… I mean -green… a boring color made beautiful and in so many variations. Then snow… diversity, variety. Also, the quirkiest animals that you wonder -what in the world? And why? They all have a purpose, a role in the environment. We see so much of it everyday we take it for granted. Our creator not only put his handprint on Earth and a reminder, he encased it with fresh water -an essential element of the existence of life. Fresh water… fresh surface water…. so many depend on it. The Great Lakes are the rarest fresh water body system on earth… unfortunately many people do not understand that the “mitten” was styled to connect with our human identity. Even when astronauts experience space, looking back on earth, they have a special moment, connection when they look at the Great Lakes. We have faith in this earth, it’s sustainability and many Michiganders do not understand groundwater contamination. Truly, they do not know what a watershed is, but worse—they blindly take for granted -fresh water. Those that do, do not have the resources to combat the false pro-Enbridge ads, lobbying, etc. I am pleading with you to stop Enbridge. The largest inland oil spill in North America happened in Michigan (Talmadge Creek, Kalamazoo River) thanks to Enbridge’s oversight and maintenance. Worse—they put in an even bigger pipeline without having to go through normal permitting processes -just ask the owners of Bell’s Brewery about the destruction to their property. Enbridge doesn’t maintain well and when things break they get to go bigger -more production profits at the expense of others. Actually, they don’t always report when things break (oil spills in National Forest), and… when the agreement for Line 5 in the Straits was made, invasive mussels were not even known in the Great Lakes. Now, they are added weight on the pipes. Video coverage shows many bad areas of the pipeline. Enbridge is Not doing responsible oversight and maintenance… why? My guess -They don’t care about the Great Lakes, they care about oil, profits. Their lobbying campaign is very high profile. They have many seeing their pipeline as a golden ticket for ‘jobs’ and comparing the “tunnel” as a technological marvel like our “Mighty Mac” – When or Mighty Mac does not endanger The Straits but is a safe and effective way to solve a human transportation issues, and clean energy jobs are a better human investment in multiple ways including better quality… not just jobs, but careers. They falsely impress upon people that Michigan, and Canadian people need this oil, when in reality they are exporting this oil, increasing their exports -and I, we, need you to lead us out of this.
