After 154 Days, Federal Court Mediator Still Wants More Time; Pipeline Remains A Ticking Time Bomb

LANSING, MI--Citizens' groups today warned that a request Wednesday by a mediator to delay proceedings in a federal suit involving Enbridge's Line 5 is putting the Great Lakes and Michigan's economic future at greater risk of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture.

A compelling new documentary was released today that scrutinizes the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac. It is a must-watch for anyone concerned about keeping oil out of the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes Petroleum Pipeline Task Force, a high-level state panel, is poised to release a long-awaited report on the safety of Line 5, a 62-year-old pipeline that transports up to 540,000 barrels of oil a day across a deep, 8-kilometer-wide (5-mile-wide) strait at the top of Lake Michigan.

Perhaps it's an ironic sign of progress that the state has finally acknowledged that it does not know if the Enbridge oil pipelines in the Straits are safe

The Northern Express listed the Line 5 pipeline as the greatest threat to the environment of northern Michigan. Following close behind are algae blooms, and demand for water elsewhere in the country. 

On January 15, 2015, a pipeline in Montana spilled up to 50,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River, the pipeline’s operator confirmed Sunday night. Frozen conditions are making cleanup very difficult. Let's think about that for a moment.

LANSING – In formal remarks today to a state task force on oil pipelines, representatives of key environmental and Great Lakes groups – echoing the concerns of businesses, governments, and thousands of citizens – called on Governor Snyder to take swift and meaningful action to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill from a pair of 61-year-old Enbridge pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac.
