Hundreds of Michigan citizens and First Nations members drive from around the state and gather in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge to draw attention to the 60-year-old pipeline lying beneath the surface of its waters. Speakers include 350.org’s Bill McKibben, as well as experts who point to Enbridge’s safety record, including a 17-hour-long leak that became the largest inland oil spill in the U.S., back in 2010 in Marshall, Michigan.
“A spill at the Straits of Mackinac would be devastating to the local tourist-based economy at the Straits, Mr. McKibben said. “People just don’t want to vacation at an oil spill.” - Mackinac Island Town Crier, July 19, 2013
