Help us by are calling on our state leaders to enforce the easement granted to Enbridge for their Line 5 oil pipelines to be allowed to operate in the Straits of Mackinac.

Take action to protect the Great Lakes from a disastrous oil spill.

Michigan Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette:

As you know, the Canadian pipeline company Enbridge pumps almost 23 million gallons of oil every day through its Line 5 pipeline, from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario.

Enbridge is currently operating in violation of the 1953 easement agreement with the State of Michigan to operate Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. Turbulent currents and winter conditions make the Straits the worst possible location for a spill. Required supports for Line 5 have washed out for the second time in two years. Independent experts have identified at least seven state and federal violations of this legal agreement with the state.

Since 1988, this 64-year-old pipeline has failed at least fifteen times, dumping about 260,000 gallons of oil on land and in marshes. This pipeline crosses along the bottom of the Great Lakes at the Straits of Mackinac, and through many sensitive inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

This pipeline poses an unacceptable risk to our water, ecosystems, health, and economy.

I urge you to act as legal public trustees of our waters and bottomlands to enforce the 1953 Easement and immediately shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill.

You must listen to the voices of the many, and stop lining the pockets of the few. This pipeline is dangerous, ill maintained, and not needed. We must get rid of Line 5. The health of the entire Midwest, and the largest sources of fresh water our country has, are at stake. We must act now, to dismantle this pipeline.

If there were to be a leak — and the possibility grows greater and greater every day — it would directly effect the lives AND livelihoods of thousand’s and thousands of people. The indirect cost would effect millions. Being underwater does not make the pipeline immune from those things which occur on land, it just makes those things different — shifting sands, zebra mussels, other invasive species. When I hear politicians from Michigan (and surrounding states) speak, there is always something about our “beautiful Great Lakes”, the “splendor and beauty of the sparkling waters”, the millions of dollars made by various commercial endeavors like fishing and tourism, the direct effects on almost every area of the economy because of the Great Lakes. I cannot for the life of me understand why not every single elected official at the local and state level has not already demanded the shut down of Line 5, proposed and passed the legislation, and had it sitting on the Governor’s desk for immediate signature. The risks are so great and the payoff so little. What will be YOUR answer politicians when something does happen?

So much of the beauty of Michigan is found in our Great Lakes. Our tourism depends on them being clean and beautiful for years to come, particularly in the summer months. Please do what you can to shut down Line 5.

Line 5 is a time bomb it’s entire length, not just the Straights section.
