Help us by are calling on our state leaders to enforce the easement granted to Enbridge for their Line 5 oil pipelines to be allowed to operate in the Straits of Mackinac.

Take action to protect the Great Lakes from a disastrous oil spill.

Michigan Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette:

As you know, the Canadian pipeline company Enbridge pumps almost 23 million gallons of oil every day through its Line 5 pipeline, from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario.

Enbridge is currently operating in violation of the 1953 easement agreement with the State of Michigan to operate Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. Turbulent currents and winter conditions make the Straits the worst possible location for a spill. Required supports for Line 5 have washed out for the second time in two years. Independent experts have identified at least seven state and federal violations of this legal agreement with the state.

Since 1988, this 64-year-old pipeline has failed at least fifteen times, dumping about 260,000 gallons of oil on land and in marshes. This pipeline crosses along the bottom of the Great Lakes at the Straits of Mackinac, and through many sensitive inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

This pipeline poses an unacceptable risk to our water, ecosystems, health, and economy.

I urge you to act as legal public trustees of our waters and bottomlands to enforce the 1953 Easement and immediately shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill.

Times change. It is no longer 1953. People are more sensitive, after seeing the devastating effect of hydrocarbon spills into the environment. Keep in mind, Enbridge is already responsible for the largest spill in MI. The Kalamazoo River oil spill, also described as The Dilbit Disaster,1 occurred in July 2010 when a pipeline operated by Enbridge (Line 6B) burst and flowed into Talmadge Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. A six-foot break in the pipeline resulted in one of the largest inland oil spills in U.S. history (the largest was the 1991 spill near Grand Rapids, Minnesota). Enbridge has eroded the trust granted in 1953. It is time to stop patching to avoid an inevitable problem. The pipeline has exceeded its engineered lifespan, and is being stressed beyond planned pressures and support spans. It is time to stop the risk before the madness occurs, not after. Please join me in signing this petition and doing our best to preserve the biological integrity of Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario due to the increasing risk of a potential spill in Line 5.

We own property on Beaver Island as do many, many other people who’s values are already suffering after the 2008 housing meltdown. If this pipeline broke the devastation to this economy would be irreparable in most of our life times. Please think of the big picture and not just the interest of Enbridge and their stockholders.

We must assure our Great Lakes are protected from self-monitoring corporations

who do not, by history or maintenance, have our water, rights, health and economics

    in their own financial interest.
