The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is holding a Public Hearing regarding Enbridge Line 5.

The purpose of the hearing is to take public comment on the permit application from Enbridge to install up to 48 anchor support structures into the lake bed for the Line 5 pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac.

Read the MDEQ Public Hearing Notice.

Regulatory Authorities Under the NREPA: Part 325, Great Lakes Submerged Lands
The applicant proposes: Enbridge pipeline (Lakehead), L.L.C. has applied for a permit, submission number HNC-AR90-WAHM0, to install up to 48 anchor support structures into the lake bed for the Line 5 pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac between Point LaBarbe in the Upper Peninsula and McGulpin Point in the Lower Peninsula under authority of Part 325. A marine infrastructure and utility contractor is proposed to work from barges, utilizing professional divers to complete the anchor installation. No new on-land staging, temporary workspaces, or new access routes will be required for the project.

These anchor supports are troubling because they constitute a new pipeline design that was never permitted under the 1953 easement for use of the Great Lakes bottomlands. Come to voice your concern.
