Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Besides major potential of spilling directly into lake, they are only trying to increase oil delivery at a lower cost to increase earnings. They don’t care about the environment. These lakes need to be protected against pollution from big industries at all cost. Keep they money on the economy level and create more green energy transportation of crude to refinerys.

as a former Michigan resident, born in St. Ignace, I would ask you to stop the oil tunnel. This region is too precious to risk.

We need to be getting more homes and businesses equipped with solar panels. Not building tunnels for fossil fuels that will erode or fail and contaminate the Great Lakes. Do we really need to repeat history of Lake Erie? No we don’t.

Please for the protection of cleanliness of our fresh water ways, the biggest in the world, do not build or expand more pipelines in our Great Lakes!! We need them decommissioned!! Please urge your fellow lawmakers to stop expanding pipelines in our great lakes!! You were elected to keep our community safe, divesting from pipelines in fresh water is the only way. Thank you

Having an oil pipeline run through what is 25% of the fresh water on earth by a company (Enbridge) with a long history of oil spills and environmental destruction is utterly delusional. This pipeline isn’t even for American oil – it goes from Canada to Canada, cutting through our precious water supply.
