Below the icy waters of the Mackinac Straits sits the Line 5 Pipeline. There is no previous data or studies detailing how to deal with a winter oil spill. An oil spill while the straits are covered in ice would be both and ecological and economic disaster for the Great Lakes Region. Originally planned to be utilized for 50 years, the pipeline is currently 64 years old.
