Ontario’s Minister of Energy yesterday made an 11th-hour appeal to Michigan’s top energy official to keep Line 5 delivering Canadian oil.

For Canada there’s only benefits to keeping Line 5 flowing through the Straits - they get 95% of the oil while Michigan takes all of the risk of pipeline ruptures. That’s because Canadian transport giant Enbridge, which owns Line 5, uses Michigan as a high-stakes shortcut to get oil to refineries in Sarnia, Ontario.
