The ferocious currents in the Straits when Lake levels are high and the incredible value of clean water makes the tunnel construction and oil infrastructure dangerous and completely irresponsible.

My family lives at “ground zero” if Line 5 breaks. I grew up on the shores of the Straits and hope to be the third generation to retire there.

The environmental and economic cost to this area by an oil spill is inestimable. The same costs of digging a tunnel haven’t been assessed or relayed to residents and other business owners of this area. Embridge – a Canadian company – holds no liability for any risk. Even if they did, the danage to the Great Lakes water system would be greater than any financial pay out could offset.

The US holds treaties with Native Americans that must be upheld. One obligation is to protect this area for tribal fishing and hunting rights, as well as many other practices that support cultural continuity. An oil spill would disrupt this heritage. We have an obligation to do everything we can to keep this promise to Native people, especially when so many promises like this have been broken.

The value of the Lakes, our communities, businesses, residences and the value of our promises and commitments should outweigh any illusory monetary value Line 5 may seem to hold.

Please, close Line 5 and prevent a tunnel from destroying our homes and families.

Oil is a dying industry. When we mive to greener energy and m9re jobs, Embridge will be out of business. Just look at the failures in oil this year as the world changed its energy habits. Embridge is risking our livelihoods, our communities, for its own greed – to make a little more money on an unsustainable industry. Michigan doesn’t receive this oil, but our residents bear all the risk.
