Today's Oil Spill in Flint - the Second Michigan Spill Within a Week is Another Warning of Big Risk to Great Lakes

Today, an oil spill was discovered in the Flint River. For the second time in one week, infrastructure that has been called “safe” has failed, leaking oil into our waterways that can never be fully cleaned up.

This should serve as a stark reminder of Enbridge’s nearly 70-year-old Line 5 pipeline, which is a constant oil spill threat located in the worst possible location for an oil pipeline failure.

Thousands of gallons spilled into the St. Mary’s River last week and the spill into the Flint River today and both are terrible. But we are at constant risk of an oil spill orders of magnitude larger every day that Enbridge continues to operate Line 5 without a valid easement. Today, we renew our call for President Biden to back Governor Whitmer and do everything he can to shut down Line 5, including revoking the Presidential Permit for Line 5 immediately.
