Announcing a FREE film screening from Straits of Mackinac Alliance

BAD RIVER is a compelling new documentary about the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band and its ongoing fight for sovereignty. The Canadian corporation Enbridge and its Line 5 crude oil pipeline threaten the Great Lakes and the Band's way of life.

The film opened in AMC theaters nationwide. The Straits of Mackinac Alliance is hosting a FREE screening at Cheboygan Opera House and is encouraging the community to attend! OWDM fully supports The Straits of Mackinac Alliance, a group of northern Michigan citizens, most with lakefront property on the Straits. They are advocating mightily for this pipeline to be made safer and shut down.

The Enbridge occupation of Bad River Territory in Wisconsin is another chapter in the systemic oppression of Native Americans. This must-see film will help to change the narrative on how we deal with this Canadian corporation. The story unfolds in a groundbreaking way through a series of shocking revelations, devastating losses, and a powerful legacy of defiance and resilience. This inspiring film brings us through an epic sweep of history into the present, with a David vs. Goliath battle to save Lake Superior, the largest freshwater resource in America. Learn more about the film and other venues.

“We gotta protect it… die for it, if we have to.” - Eldred Corbine, a Bad River Tribal Elder

This powerful new documentary film is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Mary Mazzio (I Am Jane Doe, A Most Beautiful Thing) and narrated by Indigenous activist and model Quannah ChasingHorse and award-winning actor Edward Norton (Primal Fear, American History X, Birdman).

"It’s a powerful chronicle of some of the saddest chapters in American history and a hopeful picture of the emerging possibilities for power in the crucial fights of our time." - Bill McKibben, Author & 350.org Founder

This event is hosted and organized by the Straits of Mackinac Alliance. Stay for a Q&A session SMA members after the film. Please RSVP below to receive the screening information by email. NO TICKETS are needed - just show up and enjoy!
