For eight years, Enbridge's answer to every question about the Line 5 crude oil pipeline lying in the open waters of the Great Lakes has been "wait for the tunnel." Today, the Governor of Michigan said Michigan has waited long enough. Her words.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and EGLE Director Phil Roos took bold action. They are halting a key tunnel permit and reopening the review.

Thank You Gov. Whitmer & Dir. RoosThis follows the Michigan Supreme Court's July 31 ruling, which restored the Michigan Environmental Protection Act and the public trust as the measure of what the state may permit. Now, the state will take a much harder look at this proposed, unprecedented tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac.

In a letter to Enbridge's CEO, Governor Whitmer told them to stop treating the tunnel as the only option and to start working now to get oil out of the Straits. A tunnel has never been the solution, and we applaud the Governor and Director Roos for their continued commitment to protect the Great Lakes.

We also stand with Tribal nations who have carried this fight for more than a decade and whose treaty rights the court recognized. The work is not finished.

Send a message thanking the Governor and Director Roos for taking a strong stance on the proposed tunnel and let them know the work is not done.

Now it’s time to finish the job and shut down Line 5 for good.

Take Action Now

Send Governor Whitmer and Director Roos a message of thanks for withdrawing their support for the Line 5 tunnel, and working to finish the job by shutting Line 5 down.

Why this matters right now:

  • Gov. Whitmer and Dir. Roos took a big risk to do the right thing. Let's support them.
  • The tunnel was Enbridge's plan to keep Line 5 running for decades more. With this approval vacated, the door is open to instead demand the pipeline's shutdown.
  • Whitmer's administration approved this project once already. Public support–not just the courtroom–is what moves the next decision.
  • The old dual pipelines remain exposed in the Straits right now, not on some future construction timeline. Every day of delay is a day of continued risk.

You can help now.
