Announcing a FREE film screening from the Native American Institute (NAI) of Michigan State University (MSU).

BAD RIVER is a compelling new documentary about the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band and its ongoing fight for sovereignty. The Canadian corporation Enbridge and its Line 5 crude oil pipeline threaten the Great Lakes and the Band's way of life.

This is a special invitation to the Anishinaabek and Indigenous communities. It welcomes all who are interested in and supportive of Water Protectors' ongoing efforts to defend and restore Indigenous lifeways and the natural world upon which all depend.

BAD RIVER chronicles the experiences of members of the Bad River tribe, who have for decades been engaged in various struggles to protect the waters, wildlife, and people residing within the boundaries of their Wisconsin reservation homelands and beyond. This timeline in the film revolves around and culminates in the current effort to Shut Down Line 5, the 645-mile long, 71-year-old oil pipeline owned by the Canadian corporation Enbridge that runs millions of gallons a day through the Bad River reservation and through the state of Michigan including a 4-mile section underneath the waters of the Straits of Mackinac.

“We gotta protect it… die for it, if we have to.” - Eldred Corbine, a Bad River Tribal Elder

This powerful new documentary film is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Mary Mazzio (I Am Jane Doe, A Most Beautiful Thing) and narrated by Indigenous activist and model Quannah ChasingHorse and award-winning actor Edward Norton (Primal Fear, American History X, Birdman).

"It’s a powerful chronicle of some of the saddest chapters in American history and a hopeful picture of the emerging possibilities for power in the crucial fights of our time." - Bill McKibben, Author & 350.org Founder
