Missing Coating Line 5The Canadian oil transport company, Enbridge, knew that the coating on their Line 5 pipeline has been damaged for at least three years. But time and time again, they have lied by telling us and the State of Michigan that their pipeline that runs through the heart of the Great Lakes is in "like new condition."

Stop the Lies - Shut down Line 5

The State says they are frustrated by the Enbridge lies. But that is not enough. Attorney General Bill Schuette has the authority - today - to shut down the pipeline. It's not enough to be frustrated. Now is the time for him to act.

Monday, November 6 is a day of action. Make a phone call to AG Schuette and report your call below. It's time for all of us to demand that he revoke Enbridge's easement to use the Great Lakes and begin the process of decommissioning Line 5 now.

Call AG Schuette's office: 517-373-1110

Use the following TALKING POINTS to help develop your message:

  • Enbridge has repeatedly been caught with a failing, incurable Line 5 which it can no longer fix, and is covering it up. Last week they admitted they knew about missing protective coating in 2014 and didn't tell the state until this year.
  • It's a double standard to give this company chance after chance to comply with the law when the average citizen doesn't get such breaks.
  • The Attorney General has the authority and mandate to revoke the easement under which Enbridge is operating -- the public owns the waters and Enbridge is a guest. It’s up to Enbridge to prove it can operate It's time for the Attorney General to act.

I talked to a real person, who listened politely to the request to shut down this dangerous pipeline and that it is time for Shutte to act responsibly. She said “thank you for your call”… (keep up the good work)

Demanded that Schutte immediately revoke the easement that allows Embridge to operate Line 5. The government has spent long enough and studied the issue as a delaying tactic. We know that Embridge has lied repeatedly in meetings with the citizens of Michigan. As a taxpayer and employer of Mr. Schutte, I demand that he do the job he was hired and is paid to do and that is to serve and protect the people of Michigan not the businesses of Canada. I have attended various meetings with Enbridge and know them to be liers. Enough tax money has been spent studying the issue. It is time to act.

It is not a matter of if line #5 will fail, but when.

Kalamazoo, where Enbridge was transporting tar sands, was doing so without a permit in pipes NOT designed for the corrosive tar sands oil. In addition, greater pressures are required for tar sands oil, and Enbridge is asking to pump tar sands through #5, a known antiquated line. We need to stop this environmental madness.

I made the call, got a female who works for the Attorney General, told her that we would like to voice our concern about the deteriorating condition of Pipeline 5 and the horrendous calamity it would be if it began to leak and hope that he will seriously consider telling Enbridge to shut it down. She listened, was polite, as was I, and said she’d tell him. I hope she does. The seeming lack of passion bothers me. Where is the love of our state, the passion for one of the greatest freshwater bodies of water on earth? It is irreplaceable- it is a miracle that we Michiganders are so enormously fortunate to have nearby. it is our responsibility to take care of.

    My call:

I’ve repeatedly read that Coating corrosion combined with metal fatigue is behind most pipeline failures. That’s what took out Enbridges Kalamazoo Line 6b

It’s in the news now that Coating corrosion has already happened and Enbridge lied about it

We also know that metal fatigue is happening.

    - Line 5 is already bent and deformed where Enbridge wants to anchor it

    - We don’t have real time monitoring: A scientific buoy (installed west of the bridge in 2015 ) is removed between October to April and misses November storm data.

    - Experts have stated that currents are stronger than Bechtel the designer realized

    - One expert has written “certain sections of the twinned sections of Line 5 under the Straits may be only one peak current event away from catastrophic failure”

Given all those facts I’m calling to urge Attorney General Schuette to revoke Enbridge’s easement and begin the process of decommissioning Line 5 now.

The Great Lakes are Michigan greatest treasure and it makes enormous economic sense to protect them.

I live in a tourist oriented area and cannot afford the irresponsible past actions of Enbridge. It would be financially and environmentally devastating to me and

my family to chance an oil leak in the Straits of Mackinac.
