Canada: Support the Line 5 Shutdown

Citizens groups, including tribal members, are gathering on September 1 at 11:00 AM EDT near the Canadian consulate at the international Detroit River border for a press conference. The strong message to Canada will be carried on both sides of the border and in two other Great Lakes states: Canada must stop supporting Enbridge's dangerous oil pipeline and instead support Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s shutdown order to protect the Great Lakes.

21:15 Q&A from press

Canada must immediately drop its opposition to Gov. Whitmer's Line 5 decommissioning action and begin planning for an orderly transition away from Line 5 oil. Canada should be focusing on a national energy plan that protects their Great Lakes and freshwater rather than Enbridge and the Canadian oil industry.

Canada, Ontario, the United States, and Michigan share responsibility for protecting the Great Lakes. As a reminder of that shared responsibility, we have delivered a container of clean, clear Straits of Mackinac water to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa.

Our message in a bottle to the prime minister: History will remember you for your choices today. You can protect the Great Lakes and our climate and support shutting down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.

The fact is that the Line 5 pipeline is a threat to our lives. Researchers, like Canadian scientist Dr. David Suzuki, have shared for decades the impacts of discontinued usage of fossil fuels, like the oil being carried throughout the line 5 pipeline. Every day the oil that Line 5 carries is causing a massive carbon spill into the atmosphere that is warming our planet. This is harming people in this city and in communities around Michigan and Canada.
