UPDATE: Tuesday, December 11, 12:15 PM - Here are the results of the House vote for SB 1197 (74-34). Big money and greed win today. But the fight continues. Leaving a pipeline in the Great Lakes for 10 or more years is not an option. Not on our watch. Thanks for all that called and emailed Representatives.

Proposed Talking Points

State your name and where you live.

Please vote no on SB 1197, the bill authorizing an oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. My specific concerns include:

  • The current Line 5 pipeline must be shut down as soon as possible. SB 1197 would allow the existing Line 5 pipeline to remain in the open waters of the Great Lakes for at least another decade.
  • Any tunnel should be taxed as private property. This bill would designate the utility tunnel as public property, which risks removing from the tax rolls the over $500,000 of private investment for a private corporation.
  • No state funds for the tunnel. This tunnel proposal serves primarily a private purpose, the State of Michigan should not spend our tax dollars to help a private company build, maintain, permit, or litigate this proposed tunnel.

Remember to thank them for their time!

I emailed all of them previously, and received a response from two of them. and an automated response from Lee Chatfield, who is from Levering, Mi. which is the next town over from my hometown of Cross Village. Today I tried to call Lee Chatfield. He was too busy to take my call. I left a message with whomever answered.

Just emailed Rep. Allor who spoke with me a few weeks ago. Last August she came out with a formal position against line 5. I hope this will carry forward to being against SB 1197

I expressed my feelings that 10 years is too much time to gamble with our Great Lakes on this issue. I left it at that. The gentleman who answered took my name and location. He listened, thanked me, and assured me Rep Chatfield would get my message.

Left messages (again) for my rep, Inman, and for Cambensy and Dianda. For Dianda I have been stressing that alternative propane arrangements can be found for UP.. I got Lucido"s staffer and gave him message. He did not sound familiar with SB 1197. Have sore throat so need to stop now.

I emailed each of those representatives on 11/28 and then again on 12/6 after the change was made to the reference of the Bridge Authority. I received one response from Mike Mccready basically telling me that he acknowledges my email but that the tunnel should solve the problem of Line 5 (basically ignoring the crux of my email).
