UPDATE: Tuesday, December 11, 12:15 PM - Here are the results of the House vote for SB 1197 (74-34). Big money and greed win today. But the fight continues. Leaving a pipeline in the Great Lakes for 10 or more years is not an option. Not on our watch. Thanks for all that called and emailed Representatives.

Proposed Talking Points

State your name and where you live.

Please vote no on SB 1197, the bill authorizing an oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. My specific concerns include:

  • The current Line 5 pipeline must be shut down as soon as possible. SB 1197 would allow the existing Line 5 pipeline to remain in the open waters of the Great Lakes for at least another decade.
  • Any tunnel should be taxed as private property. This bill would designate the utility tunnel as public property, which risks removing from the tax rolls the over $500,000 of private investment for a private corporation.
  • No state funds for the tunnel. This tunnel proposal serves primarily a private purpose, the State of Michigan should not spend our tax dollars to help a private company build, maintain, permit, or litigate this proposed tunnel.

Remember to thank them for their time!

We should not be committing to building 99-year fossil fuel infrastructure. The US government’s 4th Climate Assessment predicts dire impacts for Michigan and the Midwest. Please do not let the building of this pipeline go through. Protect the great lakes, land, people and wildlife. Thank you for your time.

Office staff listened politely. Sounded tired of getting calls. Didn’t want to engage in conversation. Stated simply she would share my concerns with Larry Inman.

My email: Please vote no on SB 1197. It is not a tunnel agreement – it is simply a stall tactic. All it does is guarantee that Enbridge pipelines remain in the Great Lakes for at least another decade, and will not create jobs. The people of Michigan want to protect our Great Lakes. The bill puts the Great Lakes in greater danger. The only solution to the pipeline problem is to decommission Line 5 now. The bill also hijacks the Mackinac Bridge Authority and takes its focus away from the Bridge by potentially supervising the construction and operation of a utility tunnel.

Recent studies from London Economics International show that if Line 5 was shut down tomorrow, the effect would be a 2-3 cent per gallon increase in Michigan gas prices and a 5 cent per gallon increase in propane prices. That is no concern to MI citizens who want to protect our beautiful Great Lakes. Please vote no on SB 1197 and oppose any attempts to create a separate authority during lame duck to own an oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac.

    Thank you.

Phoned Larry Inman’s office. The gentleman answered right away and was very helpful ~ did not rush me in my comments, explained where the process is at this point. He gave me the name of the Senate Majority Leader ~ Senator Meekhof. His mailbox was full and could not leave a message. His number is: 517-373-6920. I then phoned the full Senate office (517)373-2400) and left a message to tell them I could not reach Meekhof by phone and asked that they share my message of NO on SB1197.

You can help now.
