On Wednesday, Enbridge refused to provide a minimum of $900 million in liability insurance or sign any binding agreement to protect the state’s taxpayers from a catastrophic Line 5 oil pipeline failure in the Great Lakes.

Gov. Whitmer issued strong words in response, saying “I’m shocked at Enbridge Inc.’s refusal so far to sign a written agreement promising to cover the costs of an oil spill in the Great Lakes if this unthinkable event were to happen." Enbridge’s history of spills and misrepresentations requires much stronger action from the governor on Line 5 than we have seen to date.
