In a letter to the editor of The Detroit Free Press, R.D. Musser III, president of the of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and a member of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, says the State of Michigan and Enbridge, "...need to move now, with all deliberate speed, to develop an alternative to Line 5 and put it in place," to protect the Straits of Mackinac.
"I recognize that the pipeline has been in place for 63 years with no incidents. But I also know that nothing lasts forever. We simply cannot sit by to wait for something to go terribly wrong before we act to protect one of our state’s most valuable assets at its most vulnerable point. “Maybe nothing will happen,” is neither a wise nor an effective strategy." - R.D. Musser III, president of the of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island
