On November 12, 2020, Governor Whitmer announced that the easement that permitted Enbridge Line 5 to operate on the bottomlands of the Great lakes has been revoked. This action came after an exhaustive study of the violations of the easement by Enbridge. Backed up with a lawsuit filed in court by Attorney General Nessel, this action started the six-month countdown to a shutdown on May 12, 2021. This time will allow an orderly transition for the minimal amount of product that Michigan does use to be replaced.
Make no mistake - every day Line 5 continues to operate, it puts the Great Lakes at the unacceptable risk of a disastrous oil spill that could coat 700 miles of shoreline, destroy the drinking water for 20 million people, and destroy Michigan's blue economy.
In typical Enbridge fashion, they are not obeying the law. Line 5 is now operating illegally in the Straits of Mackinac. Join us to keep up the pressure to shut down this dangerous ticking time bomb.
