Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

This is important to me as a WI resident who just saw Enbridge spill 70,000 gallons of oil in Jefferson County – and lie about it (saying only 2 gallons spilled) the week before WI gave them permits to reroute Line 5. Enbridge says not to worry because they are continuously monitoring their pipelines but their monitoring did not detect the Jefferson leak. Plus, no leak is acceptable!

We need to reduce fossil fuel use to reverse climate change. Most importantly, I stand with my Native American friends of the Bad River tribe in recognition of their sovereignty and efforts on the front lines. Enbridge has been trespassing on their land for over 10 years and still the Federal government, anfter finally saying a trespass means the line has to be stopped, allows Enbridge to operate until 2026 so they can reroute Line 5 just outside the Bad River watershed. It is time to listen to our Native friends and fellow citizens. Would you insist your neighbors allow a foreign company to trespass on their land?

THE PRESIDENT OF ENBRIDGE OIL CORPORATION NEEDS TO CLEAN UP IT’S DANGEROUS AND MESSY ACT TO ENSURE THAT ANOTHER ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER DOESN’T HAPPEN AGAIN IN 2025. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. WE ARE SEEING TOO MANY FAULTY NATURAL GAS PIPELINES SPILLING NATURAL GAS IN MICHIGAN’S LAKES AND RIVERS AND IT HAS TO END IMMEDIATELY FOR THE SAKE OF NATIVE AMERICA’S WHO USE THESE LAKES AND RIVERS FOR COMMERCIAL FISHING PURPOSES.

I was told (by a former employee) years ago that Enbridge did not build the pipeline thru Canada because that country’s environmental laws are too strict.

I’m not against protecting the current pipeline with more aggressive measures (steel encased cover) but to drill 200 feet below the lake bed and having to dump that sludge somewhere, causing unknown environmental problems, I’m totally against. Please protect the Great Lakes from further pollution and keep our waters clean and usable.
