This is how we make our government accountable to the people. We'll deliver your signature to tell Gov. Whitmer the will of the people is to #ShutDownLine5

Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer & Michigan’s Legislature:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long aging Line 5 oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I urge you to take action now to decommission Line 5.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

This is important to me as a WI resident, a rooftop solar and electric car owner, and a citizen that feels we need to reduce fossil fuel use to reverse climate change. Most importantly, I stand with my Native American friends in recognition of their sovereignty and efforts on the front lines. It is time to listen to them.

Line 5 endangers the rights of the people of Michigan. Any spill of leak of Line 5 would do irrepairable harm to the citizens and be prohibitively expensive for the company to remediate, therefore placing the burden of such a cleanup upon the people of Michigan. Enbridge’s history on Line 5 shows a rupture is inevitable. It has already had at least 33 spills. Ten years later, the Talmadge Creek/ Kalamazoo River cleanup is still ongoing.

The pandemic has proven that the world can get by with less petroleum. There is no need for new petroleum pumping and the pipeline should be permanently shut down.

And all this oil is going through MI, and through several of the Great Lakes to go to Canada?! Is some “off loading” in MI?

Enbridge has made it clear they cannot be trusted. We’ve seen the spills involving their other pipelines. Their other pipelines leak and burst all the time. We are so lucky to have these amazing bodies of water surrounding Michigan. We cannot let a company put them in harm’s way just because it’s convenient for them.

I am signing this petition too late obviously, but I wanted to add my name to the list for follow up information. :)

Stop the tunnel, remove the existing pipelines, move away from fossil fuels to wind and solar.

OIl companies have enough assets to find ecology conscience methods for continuing their businesses. It just does’t appeal to their financial officers and shareholders who essentially are the people who need to put the pressure on these destructive giants. If people with invested interests understood more about the need to protect future of the Great Lakes, for their grandchildren and the existence of life the planet they might be more inclined to force the oil monsters to stop trying to fix their dangerous pipelines with dangerous follies.

I have joined several protests against Houston-based company that has been proven horribly negligent too too many times. Yet the Enbridge has been allowed to continue endangering the integrity of the water and the lands of The Great Lakes and Michigan. Well it’s high time, please, to just say “No!” to Enbridge and its plans for a tunnel to carry its poisonous oil across the Straits of Mackinac.

Thank you for your time and kind attention to my concerns for your people and environment.
