Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

I own property on an island in Lake Huron. Please take care of our beautiful Great Lakes. There are no others. Stop the pipeline. Do not build the tunnel. We have a responsibility to preserve and protect this water and our lands.

It’s not if there will be a disaster. It’s when. If enbridge is so confident in the safety of this project why did they put taxpayers on the hook for paying for disaster and legally try to exempt themselves from any liability? Would endbridge executives guarantee this project with their life? Or their families lives? Probably not. But they casually make bullshit claims about “safety” and push greenwashing campaigns down our throats. This is the last gasp of the oil industry which is becoming obsolete. The preservation of the Great Lakes region should be a top priority for the entire planet, the creatures who live here and to respect the connection of the indigenous communities that have inhabited this region for thousands of years.

Michigan’s resources are finite and should be PROTECTED. The people of MICHIGAN DEMAND that the oil tunnel be halted. This is the only responsible thing to be done. You MUST act responsibility on behalf of the people paying taxes in Michigan and protect FUTURE generations. The wildlife in the GREAT Lakes Region depend on our responsible behavior for survival.

I spent the first 18 years of my life calling Michigan home and still return several times a year, specifically to spend time in and around the Great Lakes. The beauty and serenity of these public spaces is unmatched. The Great Lakes are the lifeblood of the state of Michigan and I hope you will agree that we cannot continue to let oil companies put that at risk.

It is not necessary to build this encasement tunnel. It is dangerous to our Great Lakes if built and yes dangerous now. Shut it down! We/I love the beauty and immenseness of these largest bodies of water that are the source of what makes surrounding states and provinces the beautiful areas to behold. We need them to be protected to the fullest.

    OIL&WATER DONT MIX!!
