Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer & Michigan’s Legislature:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long aging Line 5 oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I urge you to take action now to decommission Line 5.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Enbridge has ignored our safety for decades. This tunnel benefits the oil industry Not Michigan Citizens. They care more about money than our State’s economy and drinking water. A spill could destroy Michigan’s drinking water, tourism, shipping, farming, hunting. Too little benefits for Michigan’s Citizens, too much risk. Enbridge has Never made good on their promises for safety.

Enbridge’s Line 5 oil pipeline in the open water of the Great Lakes was briefly shut down on Thursday, June 18 due to newly-discovered pipeline damage. Despite Gov. Whitmer’s formal request of Enbridge to inspect the damage and then report what happened before the pipeline was restarted, it ignored the request and restarted the pipeline Friday without providing the requested damage information.

Enbridge has proven once again that they cannot be trusted with the Great Lakes.

JUNE 25, 12:00 PM: Given Enbridge’s failure act with “due care of a reasonable a prudent person for the safety and welfare of all persons and of all public and private property” provision of the easement, Judge Jamo of Ingham County Circuit Court GRANTED A TEMPORARY RETRAINING ORDER TO SHUT DOWN LINE 5 in the Straits of Mackinac until a future court hearing occurs.

Gov. Whitmer, please revoke the 1953 easement which gave permission for Enbridge to operate in the Great Lakes.

Please shut down Enbridge Line 5.

We need to move to clean energy and therefore this line will no longer be needed and thus a tunnel is not going to be built because the need for this oil is slowing down every day. We would not even consider putting a pipeline on the bottom of the straits with it’s currents and depths that make it a terrible location, not to mention that water is now a most needed commodity. We can’t afford to be at risk for an oil spill, like so many that have already happened along this same Line 5. We are only just lucky a spill has not occurred in our Great Lakes. It needs to be shut down and removed form the bottom lands.

Lake Michigan is too important for us to allow such a huge risk to it’s fresh water. The company’s history of spills and irresponsible pipeline maintenance demonstrate that the great lakes are not safe with Enbridge line 5 functioning! please protect our natural resources!
