OWDM Condemns Unsafe Illegal Activity

To Our Supporters:

On October 19, certain individuals reportedly broke into an Enbridge Line 5 pump station in Michigan. This resulted in Enbridge temporarily halting the flow of Line 5 oil as a precaution. These individuals are not affiliated with Oil & Water Don’t Mix and to our knowledge are not associated with any member group of Oil & Water Don’t Mix.

Oil & Water Don’t Mix condemns all unsafe illegal activity associated with Line 5. This is our position whether people are trespassing to illegally turn a valve or whether it’s Enbridge's continuous illegal trespass and operation of Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac.

Since May, Enbridge has been operating Line 5 illegally in defiance of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s action terminating Enbridge’s easement agreement with Michigan. The 1953 easement gave Enbridge the conditional right to operate Line 5 in the Straits until the Canadian company was found to be committing multiple, ongoing and incurable easement violations that threaten the Great Lakes and Michigan. Every day Enbridge operates Line 5 in defiance of the state’s lawful order revoking the easement, the energy transport giant has been put on notice that it faces legal action by Michigan to recover up to an estimated $2 million a day in revenue from the pipeline.

Enbridge could choose to end the threat of Line 5 at any time by shutting off the flow of oil permanently, not temporarily. However, Enbridge’s unlawful activity to date has made it clear that ending the threat of Line 5 requires continued strong legal and political advocacy, public education, and sound decisions by judges, regulators, and elected officials.

Thank you for your support,

The Oil & Water Don’t Mix Steering Committee
