Stop Enbridge from using a crisis to push through a Line 5 oil tunnel

You can’t hold real public hearings and a public comment period in the middle of a global pandemic when the state of Michigan is under an emergency order. Enbridge knows this and wants to take advantage of the public health and economic crisis to push through environmental permitting for their proposed Line 5 oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. Compromising the state’s already severely strained financial and human resources to help Enbridge is wrong.

SIGN TO STOP ENBRIDGE FROM EXPLOITING THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND ECONOMIC CRISIS IN MICHIGAN AND DIVERTING RESOURCES AWAY FROM FIGHTING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

As COVID-19, the disease caused by a novel coronavirus has spread throughout Michigan, Executive Order 2020-4 was issued on March 10, 2020, which declared a State of Emergency in Michigan to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the virus has continued to impact Michigan severely. As a result, on April 1, 2020, a State of Emergency and a State of Disaster was declared across the State of Michigan.

In light of these circumstances we request that you order the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to prioritize actions that are responsive to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its economic impact. We believe that emergency and other urgent matters relating to health, safety, financial, or security should receive the state’s full attention. Specifically, we are requesting that you utilize the emergency declaration to delay the review of permit applications submitted by Enbridge for their proposed Straits of Mackinac Tunnel.

EGLE should consider delaying review for the Enbridge Energy permit applications for the Straits of Mackinac Tunnel Project until it has been determined emergency and disaster conditions no longer exist and appropriate programs have been implemented to allow for full and proper public engagement, as required by law.

Taking these steps would help to ensure that all appropriate state resources are directed towards the present public health and state emergency. It would also mean that the state government would not unnecessarily take steps that would call for action by local governments, businesses and other organizations affected by the current emergencies, or by our residents, whose ability to meet and communicate with each other has been limited by measures adopted in response to the emergencies. Furthermore, the ability to hold public hearings and public comment during the state emergency will not be possible.

The Great Lakes are Michigans greatest natural asset and give pleasure to residents and the many visitors who come to enjoy them. They need your protection!

Embridge needs to be out of our lake. The lack of

Maintaining and replacing this pipeline as designated has put our waters at great risk.

Embridge only cares for the money and not our environment and the state of this pipeline proves it.

You said you would stop Enbridge and now is the time to stand up to them. To exploit this situation to their advantage shows their lack of concern for anything but themselves and profit.

My sister campaigned very hard for you. I voted for you. We are both members of the Sault Chippewa Tribe, whose ancestors cared for the Great Lakes for millennia. Our waters are sacred. They give us life. You have said you are an ally to Michigan’s Native people, so walk the walk. Don’t be the one who breaks the chain of protecting them for something like corporate greed. This is the future of our state, the health and wellbeing of our children, our grandchildren. You KNOW the right thing to do. Please follow your conscious and protect our waters. Miigwech.

You can help now.
