Help us by are calling on our state leaders to enforce the easement granted to Enbridge for their Line 5 oil pipelines to be allowed to operate in the Straits of Mackinac.

Take action to protect the Great Lakes from a disastrous oil spill.

Michigan Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette:

As you know, the Canadian pipeline company Enbridge pumps almost 23 million gallons of oil every day through its Line 5 pipeline, from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario.

Enbridge is currently operating in violation of the 1953 easement agreement with the State of Michigan to operate Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. Turbulent currents and winter conditions make the Straits the worst possible location for a spill. Required supports for Line 5 have washed out for the second time in two years. Independent experts have identified at least seven state and federal violations of this legal agreement with the state.

Since 1988, this 64-year-old pipeline has failed at least fifteen times, dumping about 260,000 gallons of oil on land and in marshes. This pipeline crosses along the bottom of the Great Lakes at the Straits of Mackinac, and through many sensitive inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

This pipeline poses an unacceptable risk to our water, ecosystems, health, and economy.

I urge you to act as legal public trustees of our waters and bottomlands to enforce the 1953 Easement and immediately shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac to protect the Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill.

Line 5 represents a clear and present danger to the Great Lakes and 21% of the worlds freshwater. Once contaminated, our water is ruined. Water is life and we must protect our fresh water and the environment around the Great Lakes which is some of the most beautiful and ecologically important anywhere. I grew up going to Lake Michigan and return every year with my family to enjoy its beauty. We must protect it.

I was born and raised in Cheboygan, MI, from my house I could access 5 different lakes within a half hour from me and grew up living on the river. I can’t explain the depth, the call, the magic of the water, and it’s overwhelming connection to every Michigan native, the water is a part of each and every one of us and belongs to all those who seek to enjoy it. I grew up in the water, collecting rocks, making sand castels and eating fish my Dad caught from the lakes. Every spill in any of these lakes has caused deep heart ache, and I can’t and don’t want to imagine any sort of spill happening in the great lakes and the complete disparity it would create for Michigan and all the surrounding states and Canada. Any sort of spill could cause irreversible harm, and damage the largest source of fresh water in the world, it’s unimagiable to me that others are even considering such a proposal, with water shortage becoming such a big problem. I think we should take care of water before oil. To those who support this proposal, ask yourself what would we do without the great lakes? There have been so many accidents, I can’t imageine taking such a risk. Please reconsider this proposal and take responabilty of caring for the environment, so much has already been destoryed by our hand.
