Sign this petition to urge President Biden to act to protect the Great Lakes and climate from America's Most Dangerous Pipeline

SIGN THE PETITION

President BidenIt's time for President Biden to revoke the presidential pipeline permit and shut down the Enbridge Line 5 crude oil pipeline. An oil spill from this unnecessary pipeline in the Great Lakes threatens the drinking water of 40 million people. If it ever gets built, an oil tunnel in 10 years is not a solution to this urgent threat. He must act now to protect the Great Lakes from Enbridge's damaged, dangerous, old pipelines. Enbridge experts testified, and other independent reports attest that a pipeline shutdown would have little impact on energy prices.

Dear President Biden,

I strongly urge you to take the following actions regarding the ongoing dispute over Enbridge Energy’s outdated and dangerous Line 5 pipeline, which threatens our Great Lakes and climate:

  • Revoke the presidential permit for the Line 5 pipeline - the presidential permit is predicated upon Enbridge’s compliance with their easement agreement with Michigan. Enbridge violated that easement from 1968 until Governor Whitmer revoked it in 2020.

...petition continues below.

  • File supportive briefs in the appropriate court of jurisdiction, making it clear that Michigan has the authority to revoke the Line 5 easement and shut down the pipeline.
  • Prevent improper use of the 1977 Transit Pipeline Treaty with Canada - Canadian attempts to keep Line 5 operating by invoking the Treaty are ill-founded and disingenuous. The 4th article of the treaty allows the exact kind of conduct to protect the environment and public trust resources pursued by Governor Whitmer and the Bad River Band.
  • Follow the global commitment of COP28 to begin transitioning away from fossil fuels. Future generations are counting on you.

This administration must protect our water and start taking action on climate change. Please take these actions today.

We need to move away from expensive infrastructure that locks us into an industry that is ruining our future climate conditions. Urgent action is needed. No more new oil pipelines. Invest in training and business development to create better jobs for northern Michiganders that protect our State instead.

Enbridge has consistently lied to the public, as well as flagrantly disobeying the order of our Governor and polluting one of our major waterways. This needs to stop – this company has no regard for the people or the environment in Michigan.

Support Gov. Whitmer’s efforts to decomission Line 5. Don’t let the war in Ukraine be used as a reason to keep this line open. It is Canadian product and serves no purpose to US citizens (with the exception of less than 1% for the UP). Bottom line: RETIRE LINE 5!

My father is a small business owner in northern Michigan, an economy that is completely reliant on tourism in the summer thanks to our beautiful lakes. Keeping this hazard open, no less for a Canadian company, threatens the livelihood of hundreds of thousands and destruction of an entire ecosystem. Shut it down, show empathy, please!

I know we are highly dependent on oil but Is water not equally as important, if not more? We could learn to survive without consuming so much energy/oil although it may be a very difficult feat, however we cannot survive with poisoned natural water, soil, and food resources. This only leads to more dependency on this complex system we find ourselves in. We created this system and we can create a new one that is less dependent on consuming. An adaptation that allows us to flourish with independence, and critical thought instead of floundering in greed, dependency and ignorance. This is the part of capitalism that is veiled to be the greater good, however its actually not because either way we are fucking ourselves over. We may fail economically if we don’t install Line 5 and many may suffer from the lack of resources. If people do not learn to adapt to a less consumerist nature built on convenience it’s going to seem horrible and uncomfortable to have to figure out the mess we have created. what about if we didn’t have people concerned for the environment? In the opposite regards we will have more health issues that require more resources, more and more growth in industry and capitalism which will only demand more resources and more pollution. Either way people suffer but one choice gives hope to the future where the other just bides our time of living within the modern conveniences that are actually not going to be as convenient for us as we had hoped for in the end.

I love the under water ecosystem from the fish and amphibians to invertebrates organisms. To see such negligence leading to these amazing animals and even plants to die is absolutely horrifying. I want my little brother to be able to experience the diversity the water has to offer instead of experiencing the aftermath of such severe pollution.

Water is Life and life is sacred!

    We must protect the sacred!

Protect Michigan’s life blood from the greedy oil industry. My hometown Cross Village, Michigan, would be the second

Northern Michigan beach to be covered in oil in the case of a spill. It would devastate our community and all of the beaches around us and the communities there. Michigan must stand up for herself! We are a state who’s heart and soul are our great lakes. The United States must stand up for Michigan! Michigan holds around 80% of our great nations water. Pay attention to the states in a state of drought. Why on earth, would we be allowing Canada to pollute our fresh water?! Do they have a stake in the failure of Michigan’s fresh water systems? Everyone would have to go to Canada for fresh water experiences. 🤔 As a Native of Cross Village, and a member of the little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, my entire family is from that town and we cherish our water. For many of us, water is medicine. Water heals. Water feels, WATER IS LIFE , FOR WITHOUT IT THERE IS NO US.

    BLESS MICHIGAN

Lake Michigan and the shoreline is too beautiful to risk an oil spill. Fresh water is also going to be a precious commodity in the very near future.
