Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Sign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 37 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned, spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

I’ve lived 72 years a mile from line 5 running under the straits of Mackinac. The risk is too great to the Great lakes and the state of Michigan if a spill ever occurs. Enbridge has other land routes to get their product back into Canada. Also the sludge from drilling the tunnel is predicted to be discharged back into the lake. What happens to the lake before the sludge settles? Many residents draw their drinking water from the lake. Fish cannot survive murky water. As it is, the great lakes are fighting against the Asian carp, zebra mussels, gypsy moths, Japanese beatles, and many more. History has proven indigenous natives lived in the straits area when there was only a river and before the lakes joined. How many artifacts will be destroyed? Most construction sites have dug up native remains for many years. If line 5 must be built I hope the state and federal governments will demand a multi billion dollar bond to cover any damage or pollution.

Thanks for taking this action. We risk so much if there is ever an oil spill in the Straits. Think alone what an oil spill would do to our gem, Mackinaw Island. Encouraging the processing of tar sand oil is not in our children’s best interest going forward.
