Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

It’s time to start protecting the environment from spills. You think that all the oil is a solution? It’s the problem.

As a state and a country, we can’t afford the possibility of a break or spill devastating the largest fresh water source in the nation.

Gov. you need to share this as much as you share your other opinions, get the whole story out. I questioned your views on the shutdown but now I see the truth! SHUT IT DOWN!

The State should have zero risk tolerance for a possible oil spill in our glorious Great Lakes. Therefore, shutting down Line 5 is the ONLY option.

I spent my youth on Beaver Island, graduated from Petoskey, spent years operating family businesses on Mackinac Island, and now live in the Les Cheneaux Islands with my wife, children and grandchildren. I take the preservation of our fresh water resources and ecosystems very seriously. I captained a research vessel 20+ years ago for FEPA in the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas gathering data on the failing reef system, and now continue to monitor our Great Lakes health and environmental policy. The questionable track record of oil and fracking companies is noteworthy and cannot be scrutinized enough as you make decisions going forward. Please think long and hard of our future generations. Short term profits from a questionable future energy source must not dictate the end game in this important process.

    Sincerely, Geoff Rudolph

Mr. Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, please educate yourself on this issue. Protect our Inland Seas and revoke the permit immediately. Enbridge can reapply if they are willing to stand by the integrity of line 5 pipeline and meet current safety and engineering standards.
