Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

This pipeline is a danger to the entire ecosystem of the great lakes, as on lake flows into another….. largest FRESH water in USA. Obly fools would risk destroying it

The risk of an oil spill and its consequences are already well known, based on the past 33 leaks. Fresh water is necessary for life. Why tempt the danger of oil spills?

Not only has Enbridge repeatedly proven its unwillingness to respect agreements with native peoples unless forced to by court order, it has refused to maintain Line 5 in a satisfactorily safe or environmentally conscious way (if an oil & gas pipeline even can be environmentally conscious). Their bottom line should not be buoyed by state or federal government with a last minute non-solution to a problem they have already refused to solve. Enbridge should not be given a way out of the pit they’ve dug themselves, especially since it comes at such high risk to damage of the Great Lakes and its shorelines. Not only this, but continuation of this kind of infrastructure discourages moves to more sustainable options as it takes possible money from those projects and proves to the companies that they can just keep their current, more profitable structures and expect to be bailed out by the government.

Our state, our citizens and our environment should not be sacrificed for the wants of a giant corporation that cares nothing for our great lakes ecosystem. Enbridge thinks that they can hold us hostage by lying about their pipelines importance. People will say that Michiganders need the pipeline for fuel, which is exaggerated. Michigan needs a healthy great lakes system for the thousands of jobs and people who depend off tourism and recreation in our state. Nobody is going to visit the beaches if they are covered in oil. We need to prioritize the health of the great lakes, not the wellbeing of the Canadian oil market.
