Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

“NIIC supports the immediate shutdown of Line 5 once an alternate route is established. In the interim, NIIC maintains that Line 5 should continue operating only under strict monitoring, and if the line fails or poses imminent risk during this period, we would support its immediate shutdown. Our priority is to protect the water while ensuring a responsible and stable transition for the communities who rely on this infrastructure.”

“To achieve this transition, NIIC intends to organize a coordinated funding and planning effort involving the Government of Canada, the relevant Provincial governments, and the appropriate U.S. State authorities. Our goal is to develop a safe, rights‑respecting alternative route to Sarnia that eliminates the need for both the proposed Line 5 tunnel and the existing St. Clair River crossing. More information about NIIC’s work and mandate can be found at our public page: facebook.com/NIIC. . This approach ensures long‑term protection of shared waters while building a modern, secure energy corridor that reflects the responsibilities and partnerships of all governments involved.”

“NIIC has assigned Neil McCauley ([email protected]) as the Single Point of Contact for the Line 5 file. This comment is submitted under that designation and reflects NIIC’s position on the matter.”

Protect all the Lakes, a spill here would affect Michigan and Huron and into the St, Laurence Seaway.

Prayers that everyone gets their act together, & agree to shut it down.

They, & we, have a responsibility to protect the Earth. Enbridge does not seem to care to do so …. At least not the USofA’s portion.

I’m sure Canadians would have a fit if we maintained the Alaskan Pipeline the same way they maintain their pipelines.

Leave the land intact for posterity and find a renewable, cleaner fuel source. The Lakes are already in enough danger.

It is a crime to put fresh water source at risk. There should be other ways to deliver oil. Those, who wants to do this dangerous project, pro, don’t drink water..
