Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Let’s spend money on alternative’renewable’ sources of energy. This tunnel is dangerous to the lives of all Michiganders. Shut down pipeline 5 and get creative about other energy sources.

Clearly, Enbridge’s CEO, Al Monaco and his 2020 $170 billion infrastructure profits and 16% dividends steadfastly seeks to use and abuse our Michigan waterways and our land for his own insidious profit, in total disregard for the safety and well being of our precious fresh water and rich land, risking the poisoning of our soil and crops, and the health and well being of our beautiful wildlife and our people. As a first line health care professional who sees the devastation of environmental toxicity on the health and lives of the people of this great state, dear Governor Whitmer, I respectfully emplore you to protect your people, your water and your lands in the same way you have shown integrity, courage and fortitude, maintaining our safety during the COVID pandemic.

Hydrocarbon fuels are on the way out in our struggle against global warming. It is not worth the risk to the environment to build more infrastructure for a soon-to-be-obsolete energy source. This energy source will only be needed another ten years but our lakes are here for all time and eternity as far as most of us view it.

Gross negligence, or willful ignorance. Let this pipeline die. For a better Michigan, and a better tomorrow for the planet.

Enbridge has a failed record…Kalamazoo River and Talmadge Creek and they dragged their feet for 6 years. They are already responsible 33 spills and 1.1 millions of gallons from Line 5. Water is more important than oil..STOP
