Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 73-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Please shut down the line five pipeline. Not only to protect the Great Lakes but to put incentive behind the renewable energy industry. This would add jobs to Michigan’s economy. Thanks

Line 5 endangers the rights of the people of Michigan. Any spill of leak of Line 5 would do irrepairable harm to the citizens and be prohibitively expensive for the company to remediate, therefore placing the burden of such a cleanup upon the people of Michigan. Enbridge’s history on Line 5 shows a rupture is inevitable. It has already had at least 33 spills. Ten years later, the Talmadge Creek/ Kalamazoo River cleanup is still ongoing.

The pandemic has proven that the world can get by with less petroleum. There is no need for new petroleum pumping and the pipeline should be permanently shut down.

Enbridge has made it clear they cannot be trusted. We’ve seen the spills involving their other pipelines. Their other pipelines leak and burst all the time. We are so lucky to have these amazing bodies of water surrounding Michigan. We cannot let a company put them in harm’s way just because it’s convenient for them.

I am signing this petition too late obviously, but I wanted to add my name to the list for follow up information. :)

Stop the tunnel, remove the existing pipelines, move away from fossil fuels to wind and solar.

I have joined several protests against Houston-based company that has been proven horribly negligent too too many times. Yet the Enbridge has been allowed to continue endangering the integrity of the water and the lands of The Great Lakes and Michigan. Well it’s high time, please, to just say “No!” to Enbridge and its plans for a tunnel to carry its poisonous oil across the Straits of Mackinac.

Thank you for your time and kind attention to my concerns for your people and environment.

    Sincerely,

    Judith Emerson
