Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer & Michigan’s Legislature:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long aging Line 5 oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge to you prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Investing in oil infrastructure is a foolish investment, especially when it compromises one of our most valued resources. A pipeline, whether in a tunnel or not, poses a great threat to the great lakes which are protected under the public trust doctrine. Even IF a tunnel were to be built, risk is still a factor through the US 2 corridor where the pipeline crosses several stream crossings that empty directly into Lake Michigan. Michigan receives a minimal amount of benefit from this pipeline, yet the risks outweigh the reward. Please consider these factors, as well as the wellbeing of future generations’ when making such heavy decisions.

All you got to do is redirect the pipelines and go somewhere else on dirt, not the water !!!!! it’s common sense! !water and oil don’t mix !!!

    duh.

Dottie Hawthorne. You promised on Day 1 of your office that you would shutdown Line 5 and here we are with no action! When will we see some strong action from this? We expect more than just talk, we want you to walk the walk that we elected you to do! This is critical to the environment and the health of our state.

The consequences of an oil spill in Great Lakes waters far outweigh any questionable benefits of an oil tunnel. Enbridge has been dishonest and slow to act on their many oil spills before. There is no reason to expect them to change now. Please don’t let them build this dangerous project in our Great Lakes.

The time to study & construct a tunnel was 8 years ago when Gov. Snyder & A.G. Schutte thought it was important. They are long-gone now and December 2018 was NOT the time to “stuff it down our throats.” Stop Enbridge in their tracks – Line 5 is not crucial to Michigan and it is a very bad idea to have oil pipelines anywhere near the Great Lakes watershed!

The Great Lakes are Michigan’s Greatest Resource that needs to be protected now and for future generations. All life depends on clean water, and Michigan is unique in comparison to other states, being surrounded by fresh water. Hopefully, we have learned from the PFAS nightmare and will ensure the safety of our Great Lakes. Enbridge needs to be accountable in this endeavor.

Enough is enough. The environmental risks that Canada has been placing on Michigan need to end ASAP. The violations and number of lines from Enbridge would never be allowed in their home country…… Canada. The USA has a birds nest of Enbridge lines . Enough! Deny the tunnel as well. Shut down Line 5 and all alternative proposals , Enbridge has had violations since 1953.

please stop Embridge and their disstructive ways of profiting off of US citizens by their illegal transportation of oil, without being held accountable for damages incurred from oli spills.

The consequences of a spill in the great lakes is more detrimental than Enbridges loss of profit, or the financial investments into finding other sources of propane and light oil.
