READ THE TROUBLING FACTS surrounding the Synder-Enbridge oil tunnel deal.

Enbridge and Michigan's Governor made a backroom deal to explore build a tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac that would keep Canadian oil flowing through the Great Lakes for at least 7 to 10 more years, if not forever. The deal would also put the Mackinac Bridge Authority and Michigan taxpayers at financial risk.

We have questions. You probably do too.

On November 8 in St. Ignace, Enbridge will pitch its tunnel proposal to members of the bridge authority for the first time. Gov. Snyder wants the bridge authority to own Enbridge’s tunnel, marking the first time since the authority was created in 1950 that its sole mission of maintaining and operating the Mighty Mac would be compromised.

Bridge authority members are inviting questions from the public, which is great. The bridge authority was not asked in advance by the Snyder administration to be part of this mess, so we encourage you to respectfully email authority Secretary Bob Sweeney with your questions.

Here are some questions you may choose to ask the bridge authority (feel free to copy & paste):

Why should the bridge authority own the risky tunnel and be saddled with Enbridge through a 99-year lease, especially given Enbridge’s horrible track record in Michigan?

Why should the bridge authority assume financial risk in the event of a tunnel collapse and pipeline rupture for a private Canadian oil company when most of the oil in Enbridge’s Line 5 is for Canada’s use?

The agreement between Enbridge and Gov. Snyder would only provide $1.88 billion in financial pledges from Enbridge in the case of major damages when economists estimate the cost of a worst-case spill could reach $6.3 billion. Why should the bridge authority potentially put the financial health of the Mackinac Bridge at risk by taking responsibility for Enbridge’s oil tunnel?

Why is the administration considering bypassing a thorough environmental review of the Snyder-Enbridge oil tunnel under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act instead of looking at better alternatives which include decommissioning Line 5 now?

Why should Michigan shoulder the burden of the costs of maintaining a safe pipeline through one of our most valuable waterways? Shouldn’t Enbridge be required to fund the solution the State finds for them, not the other way around?

Wasn’t the damage to the Kalamazoo River in 2010 enough to convince us that Enbridge is more than willing to pollute our wonderful waterways for the sake of profits?

What in a logical world would the Machinac Bridge Authority want to take on the lease and responsibility of overseeing a Canadian for profit entity like this Line 5 tunnel proposition? Enbridge has a horrendously BAD Track record in Michigan and the MBA has tasks to CAREFULLY OVERSEE THE safety, maintainence and beauty of the Straits and doesn’t need to be messing with oil and gas…except in decommissioning Line 5. The Canadian company’s INSURANCE AMOUNT IS INADEQUATE if a spill were to happen and even if it was the coverable amount the pristine beauty and damage to human and wildlife really has no monetary value. When forward thinkers are turning to clean sustainable energy why would our State want to support a foreign company’s production of oil,gas based dirty energy?

PLEASE SAY “NO” to Line 5 tunnel and decommission Line 5 immediately…it’s not in the best interest of the citizens of Michigan!!

The unthinkable consequences of an oil spill in the Great Lakes need to disallow any continuing oil flow through the Straits. Neither Embridge nor Snyder have the credibility to enter such an agreement as the proposed tunnel. Governor Snyder has often acted as the self-appointed expert, only to later distance himself from responsibility when things go wrong.

if proven track record is not good then why proceed Canada sampling and chiefs dont want this if risk of leaks and the few engineers jobs for free trade or for the sake of shares i oil its not worth it.

We already know how poorly Governor Snyder’s decisions are about the health and safety of Michigan’s watereays. Kalamzoo, Flint and the Washtenaw are compromised river systems. The clean up will cost Michigan residents in taxes, loss of business income and in health issues arising from poisoned water. Digging up the Mackinac Straits is worse than all the above failures of Governor Snyder. The Bridge Authority should not be saddled with Gov. Snyder’s bad choices. He is already responsible for poisoning the residents of Flint and somehow is not held accountable for this travesty. Michigan’s next governor should have the say in this vital decision.

Governor Snyder, you didn’t have any mandate from voters in this state to enter into a back room deal with Enbridge! How dare you!! As a lame duck Governor you should be especially careful. Have you heard of the legacy public officials leave behind? No one would thank you for this. I understand that the projected construction of the tunnel will take at least 5 years. During that time, the oil will continue to flow through the dangerous Line 5 pipeline! I am a person who has worked hard to get the pipeline shut down, and it’s terrible to see that you ignore the will of the people. Yes, a majority of Michigan citizens are in favor of shutting it down!

No tunnel, no Line 5. just shut it down and let Canada runs their own lines through Canada. Even the smallest risk of a spill is too much. Our Great Lakes, rivers, streams and Inland lakes should not be put to a test for money and greed. The Bridge Authority does not want the responsibility of this stupid idea from Lansing. Make it known that you are vehemently opposed.
