Building a tunnel for Enbridge Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is not a solution to protect the Great Lakes, 400 other water bodies, including Lake Michigan, or our dangerously overheating climate.

Oil BurnSign to protect the Great Lakes from *another Line 5 oil spill

Dear Gov. Whitmer & Secretary Buttigieg:

An oil tunnel through the public bottomlands of the Straits of Mackinac won’t protect the Great Lakes from a 645-mile long, 71-year-old Line 5 crude oil pipeline that has leaked at least 33 times into Michigan's environment. Even when its oil isn't spilling into the water, it adds to our climate crisis when burned by spilling carbon into the atmosphere every day. The time to end the threat of a catastrophic oil pipeline rupture is now. Instead of leaving a vulnerable and hazardous oil pipeline operating in the Mackinac Straits for years while trusting a dishonest Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, I support your action to revoke the Line 5 easement and urge you to prevent an oil tunnel from being constructed.

* Yes, Enbridge Line 5 has already spilled 33 times and 1.1 million gallons.

Big oil has shown time and time again that they cannot be trusted to protect our environment. The Great Lakes are a HUGE and important source of fresh water for the United States. Who do you think is going to be paying the consequences when there’s a spill? How many more Flint Michigan’s do we need? Why do we constantly put money hungry and greedy corps who will cut all corners possible for the sake of profit over the needs of society as a whole? Stay away from the lakes and rivers. Spend your money to pit pipelines in places strategically to have as little environmental impact in the case of failure as possible. Human life and the world we have to live in is more important than oil and natural gas profit.

This is a deadly disaster waiting to happen that will destroy the waters that millions of Americans rely on! Honor the treaties and help slow the climate crises!

I am extremely concerned as a WI resident living along Lake Michigan. If the line were to rupture, the contaminates would affect all the great lakes and connecting rivers and tributaries. The great lakes are a source of fresh water for millions of people and many times more animals. It is vital to protect our fresh water lakes and the biodiversity they contain. This is not what the American or Canadian people want.

Stop the oil pipelines now! No more environment damage due to oil and gas companies ignorance and lack of morals! The death and hardship that these areas will face will be drastic and catastrophic! To prove this will happen there are many that have already gone through this and it has been documented to prove it! The racial and economic bias that drives these pipelines needs to end now! The impacts on minority groups is not by accident! It is by design. The oil and gas pipelines will be a never ending fight until our laws protect the people and not the corporate stooges who use money and lobbiests to get what they want by bribing elected officials! We need our elected officials to work for WE THE PEOPLE! #EATTHERICH #ENDCORPORATERULEINTHEUSANOW

There are more jobs in decommissioning Line5 than in building a tunnel for it. (2017 dynamic risk study) & those jobs are safer than those for the poorly designed & prepared tunnel . Here’s a link
