On July 1, 2014, a total of 17 conservation, water, environmental and tribal organizations sent a letter to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder urging immediate state action to regulate Enbridge’s Line 5 pipelines under the Straits of Mackinac. The letter cites several potential violations to the contract between the State of Michigan and Enbridge, and outlines the State's perpetual public trust authority to regulate this pipeline and protect the waters of the Great Lakes. This Citizen's Letter is a summary of the official letter sent to Governor Snyder.

Dear Governor Snyder:

An oil pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac is putting the Great Lakes at risk. Our state is allowing the pipeline to operate despite questions about whether Enbridge, the pipeline owner, is complying with the terms of its 1953 easement or laws to protect the Great Lakes.

We the undersigned urge you to make all information about the pipeline available to the public, and require that Enbridge immediately:

  • Share with the public and the State detailed information about the contents, use, and safety of the pipeline
  • Comply with all terms and conditions of the existing easement
  • File an authorization application under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act to secure state permission for activities on state-owned public trust bottomlands

I am 16 years old and have spent my childhood summers on Bois Blanc Island in Lake Huron. This pipeline’s existence terrifies me, especially because of the fact that it very well may not be up to code. As a concerned Michigan student, I would like to think that our politicians would have some sense to enact upon this potential threat as soon as possible. There have been far too many “Oopsies” and “It won’t happen again”s with oil spills in Michigan and all over the country. The Great Lakes are so extremely important to Michigan’s tourism, environment, and history that they are definitely not the place to risk it. I understand that it isn’t a small project and will take time as well as money, however, the threat that this overfilled, old pipeline has on Michigan as a whole is tremendous. I hope that action will soon be taken and appreciate your time.

I am not opposed to all oil piplines. In fact, I live only one house away from an oil pipeline. There have never been any problems, and the pipeline was replaced in a timely manner. I have never complained about that pipeline. I am only opposed to bad engineering decisions which endanger the Great Lakes ecosystem and the well being of countless people. There is still time to prevent an unthinkable disaster. We must act now for the next seven generations and keep the Great Lakes strong, vibrant, and beautiful.

This is disturbing, we need to preserve our fresh water. How could even the threat of this possibility be allowed?
