The bus announcement on LDLD says Grayling in one place and Gaylord in another. Which is it?

Can voters in Michigan gather signatures to create a Ballot Proposal in 2020 to prevent all oil and gas pipelines from moving through, under or over the Great Lakes? Or to prevent Public or Private companies from creating “Great Risk” to the health and future of our Natural Resources? I would think Voters should be able to stop this with enough signatures since every voter has equal rights to enjoy nature and save it from risky business behavior.

    Hello,

I am just curious about how this organization views the issue of the Enbridge Line 5 Pipeline. Last I heard from Governor Snyder was that progress was being made and repairs are being planned. Being this site is strong against the fact that oil and water don’t mix, I aim to understand how you believe this issue has developed and if the outcomes are positive? Do you believe the plans regarding this issue has been overdue? Are the plans better for the Great Lakes or could more be done? Any thoughts about the issue will help.

    Thank you,

    Dear Secretary Sweeney.

I have some serious reservations concerning the assignment of line 5 to the Bridge Authority (BA). Why would the BA agree to enter into an agreement with a company with such a deplorable safety record? Why would the BA consider

partnering with a Canadian Company transporting toxic materials across our state for the primary benefit of Canada, certainly not Michigan? Why would the BA even consider the financial and legal implications of entering into such

an agreement? I understand that Enbridge has pledged 1.88 billion, but that is a far cry from the potential exposure of 6.3 billion. Is the BA prepared to cough up the potential difference of 4.42 billion?

Also, the continued use of the pipeline violates the Submerged Lands Act, and the Indian treaties that were entered into in good faith to protect indigenous fishing rights. Should you approve this agreement, reached behind closed doors

between our lame duck Governor and Enbridge, are you prepared to face the onslaught of legal challenges from Michiganders and the Indian people that are inevitable?

Lastly, protecting the drinking water of more than 35 million people must prevent piping environmentally toxic materials under any body of water, be it freestanding or buried. Both are unacceptable, and would place you potentially at odds

with 9 states, and those Canadians that understand the implications of approving such an agreement.

Please consider very carefully your role in protecting our state for existing and future generations, and give credence to the motto “Pure Michigan” .

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Paul J. Keck

Is there anything we can do in support of the law suit two environmental groups are bringing against the coast guard for lack of preparedness in case of an Enbridge line 5 spill? When will hearings be held? Has anything similar been tried in the past? Thoughts on the chances of success?

The Mackinac Bridge is a very strong – redundantly strong – superstructure. Why not remove line 5 from under the water and put it above the water? Attach a pipeline to the bridge structure. It could be constantly monitored, quickly shut down in case of trouble, and easily repaired as needed.

As ships and vessels have a right to navigate the waters of the Great Lakes to transport goods to and fro for the public good in a safe manner, and as anchors are an important part of controlling and operating a ship, coupled with the fact the Great Lakes waterways are a major highway of waters for many companies, are the shipping companies on board to get Line 5 decommissioned? If not, then why not? Shipping companies should have the inherent right to drop anchor wherever needed to protect the ship, cargo, passengers, or crew anytime as needed, and not have to worry about, or being held liable for some foreign object on the lakebed. A lakebed a shipping company depends on to slow a vessel down if need be, and especially in unpredictable circumstances such as sudden strong winds, or if engine were to break down which could cause a crash if a ship operator couldn’t drop anchor for example. The right to anchor would seem synonomis to the right to navigate on a public body of water that serves the public first and foremost according to the Public Trust Doctrine of the State of Michigan. Thank you to all OilandWaterDontMix supporters for all you do to protect our Great Lakes in working to decommission Line 5 Oil pipeline; as there are other options to purchase oil and gas from Michigan companies, and keeping Michigan dollars in Michigan.

Hi Judy: 95% of the oil that flows through Line 5 comes from Canada and goes back to Canada, using the Straits of Mackinac as a high-risk shortcut. It’s not our job to move this oil for a foreign corporation. If they want to move it, there is a network of other pipelines that don’t cut through the Great Lakes. There is all sorts of information about this here: https://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/sucker Thanks!

What are the alternatives to Line 5 Pipeline? We live within five minutes of Traverse Bay, and so the effects of an oil spill would greatly and quickly effect our lives. Yet, without our (whether the ‘our’ is Michiganders or other people) changing the way we live and using the products for which the oil is necessary the need will still be there. Perhaps the alternate solutions are set forth in your website – I can’t find them. I would very much like to put out a yard sign and volunteer but want to be well-informed so as to intelligently answer any questions about solutions, not just the problem.

My name is John Twichel and I teach STEM to 5th graders in Sault Ste Marie, MI. Our class has been studying Line 5, contacted Enbridge via email(with hard hitting questions), built and used 12 ROVs and enjoyed the MSP presentation on their two ROVs and their AUV. Would it be possible to supply my fifth graders with bumper stickers to show their support of the shutting down of line 5?

Hi, I am a student from Central Michigan University. I am working with a group of students on an action plan project to get the line 5 pipeline shut down. Our goals are to increase awareness of the dangers of line 5, find out what other students know about line 5, and to contact government officials and send them the information we find. We would like to know if there is anything you could send us to help us get the word out around campus and increase awareness.

My name is Sky Cato. There are very few people that are aware of what you are about to read about. It’s not a solution for every problem but it can significantly reduce or stop pipeline leaks and ruptures from occurring. My grandfather developed a process that allows us to clean & epoxy coat up to 20-mile sections of new and old pipelines without digging up or segmenting the pipeline. We can save and significantly increase the lives of pipelines. We have tried to make people aware and promote this service for years but have had a difficult time reaching people. Our company is called Internal Pipeline Solutions www.internalpipeline.com. We want to make a difference in the world and I just thought that maybe you could help. If anyone actually reads this; thank so you very much for your time.

Just wondering if your organization knows about the oil spill currently taking place in Manistee County. It’s on 8 mile road between Chief rd. and US Hwy. 31. I just talked to someone from the MDEQ oil and gas division and they said that it’s been going on for about a month now. It was from a 4 inch pipeline from well to surface facility. It has spread 300 feet from the “pin hole” size leak. They have to pump all the surface water (it’s of course in a wet land) and run that water through a carbon vessel to extract the petroleum and then discharge the water back into the environment. The soil is being dug up and put in the Manistee land fill. Any action on this from your organization?

Michigan is the “Great Lakes” state. It is the bountiful water we are surrounded by that is Michigans greatest resource after its citizens.

Surely there are better, safer, and more sane ways to move this fuel than through an aging pipeline. Governor Snyder agreement did nothing to remove the risk of a horrible pipeline leak.

Didn’t we learn anything from the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico?

I posted this in several places on Face Book. See below re ?s ask by MRG poling.

Today is the last day for public comments on Line 5: http://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/submit_your_line_5_comment?splash=1

I was just questioned by a worker for MRG, a polling company.

The way questions are asked has a big influence on the answers. Many of the questions had false premises, that is, the information read before the question included misleading statements and falsehoods. The poll was clearly designed to elicit responses more favorable than the facts warrant, and its results will likely be used in new releases and to craft Enbridge PR:

This is one of the more telling questions asked:

Recently the State of Michigan and Enbridge reached an agreement to protect the Great Lakes and to keep the public informed. (1) The agreement requires Enbridge to temp shut done line 5 when adverse weather creates sustained waved in excess of eight feet in the Straights of Mackinaw (2); by June 2018 to evaluate additional state of art tools and underwater technologies that could help further inspect and maintain Line 5 (3); to put into place additional safety measures to further reduce the risk of anchor strikes from boats in the straights and replace Line 5 at the St. Clair river crossing and place the new pipeline under the river bed; and increase coordination with state government regarding the operations, maintenance, and future of line by increasing transparency and cooperation; and by June 2018 have evaluated three options for the event replacement of pipeline in the Straights of Mackinaw.(4)

Do you support or oppose continued operation of Line 5 in State of Michigan?
The first sentence is not true; the agreement will do little to protect the straights. The agreement is in fact designed to keep line five pumping before the result of public hearings on alternatives. Enbridge has withheld critical information during this process. For example, it concealed knowledge about gaps in the cladding and their emergency response information is heavily redacted, that is, the details about emergency response are blacked out. There is no mention that the Coast Guard in November testified to Congress that it did not have the capacity to respond to a spill. In fact the agreement was signed before public hearings on alternatives were completed.
Far more dangerous are winter ice which prevents any type of clean up and the currents that will always be there and widely disperse spills.

No mention is made that current inspections have repeatedly missed things like missing cladding and long sections of the pipeline undercut by currents and supported by nothing more than wishful thinking.

The study of alternatives has been improperly limited to the study of ways to keep Line 5 open, Enbridge has a long history of misleading and concealing informations, and has no inherit right to continue pumping oil under our Great Lakes.

I could go on, but why not go onto this website and voice your opposition to the pipeline. Today’s the last day and it’s as easy as signing in and saying that ‘Pipe Line is unsafe, Enbridge has a history of spills and deception and is putting at risk our precious waters for the sake of a 19th century fuel source” or your own words, like “Shut the line down NOW.” http://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/submit_your_line_5_comment?splash=1

    Other questions:

These are four things opponents say; do they make you more or less likely to support (or oppose? ) Line 5:

Putting in more technology to find out sooner when line five 5 ruptures is not the same as protecting the great lakes.

The agreement has good steps but these are only band-aids.

Five Native American tribes oppose the line five bc doesn’t protect tribal fishing rights.

This was a back-room deal worked out between Governor Snyder and Enbridge.

What is the current status of Line 5? I was not able to attend the meeting in St. Ignace . Didn’t the State know that Dynamic Risk was in the pocket of Enbridge? The only solution is to shut Line 5 down now. This must be attended to immediately as evidence of corrosion is much worse than Enbridge is saying. They have not been truthful about any spill they have been responsible for in the past. The equipment available at the Straits is woefully inadequate to address any spill. When are they going to tell the truth?

You can help now.
