I am just curious about how this organization views the issue of the Enbridge Line 5 Pipeline. Last I heard from Governor Snyder was that progress was being made and repairs are being planned. Being this site is strong against the fact that oil and water don’t mix, I aim to understand how you believe this issue has developed and if the outcomes are positive? Do you believe the plans regarding this issue has been overdue? Are the plans better for the Great Lakes or could more be done? Any thoughts about the issue will help.
Thank you,
Rachel Miller
I have some serious reservations concerning the assignment of line 5 to the Bridge Authority (BA). Why would the BA agree to enter into an agreement with a company with such a deplorable safety record? Why would the BA consider
partnering with a Canadian Company transporting toxic materials across our state for the primary benefit of Canada, certainly not Michigan? Why would the BA even consider the financial and legal implications of entering into such
an agreement? I understand that Enbridge has pledged 1.88 billion, but that is a far cry from the potential exposure of 6.3 billion. Is the BA prepared to cough up the potential difference of 4.42 billion?
Also, the continued use of the pipeline violates the Submerged Lands Act, and the Indian treaties that were entered into in good faith to protect indigenous fishing rights. Should you approve this agreement, reached behind closed doors
between our lame duck Governor and Enbridge, are you prepared to face the onslaught of legal challenges from Michiganders and the Indian people that are inevitable?
Lastly, protecting the drinking water of more than 35 million people must prevent piping environmentally toxic materials under any body of water, be it freestanding or buried. Both are unacceptable, and would place you potentially at odds
with 9 states, and those Canadians that understand the implications of approving such an agreement.
Please consider very carefully your role in protecting our state for existing and future generations, and give credence to the motto “Pure Michigan” .
Sincerely,
Dr. Paul J. Keck

Trying to find some signs. Most local places in northern MI are sold out. Can I still purchase on line for mailing?
I am looking to leave my current industry and lend my unique talents to the cause. I would like to submit my resume to your fine organization for any future openings please. Can I get an email address so I can pass my resume along ? Thank you, and thanks for all you are doing.

Most respectfully,
Surely there are better, safer, and more sane ways to move this fuel than through an aging pipeline. Governor Snyder agreement did nothing to remove the risk of a horrible pipeline leak.
Didn’t we learn anything from the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico?

Today is the last day for public comments on Line 5: http://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/submit_your_line_5_comment?splash=1
I was just questioned by a worker for MRG, a polling company.
The way questions are asked has a big influence on the answers. Many of the questions had false premises, that is, the information read before the question included misleading statements and falsehoods. The poll was clearly designed to elicit responses more favorable than the facts warrant, and its results will likely be used in new releases and to craft Enbridge PR:
This is one of the more telling questions asked:
Recently the State of Michigan and Enbridge reached an agreement to protect the Great Lakes and to keep the public informed. (1) The agreement requires Enbridge to temp shut done line 5 when adverse weather creates sustained waved in excess of eight feet in the Straights of Mackinaw (2); by June 2018 to evaluate additional state of art tools and underwater technologies that could help further inspect and maintain Line 5 (3); to put into place additional safety measures to further reduce the risk of anchor strikes from boats in the straights and replace Line 5 at the St. Clair river crossing and place the new pipeline under the river bed; and increase coordination with state government regarding the operations, maintenance, and future of line by increasing transparency and cooperation; and by June 2018 have evaluated three options for the event replacement of pipeline in the Straights of Mackinaw.(4)
Do you support or oppose continued operation of Line 5 in State of Michigan?
The first sentence is not true; the agreement will do little to protect the straights. The agreement is in fact designed to keep line five pumping before the result of public hearings on alternatives. Enbridge has withheld critical information during this process. For example, it concealed knowledge about gaps in the cladding and their emergency response information is heavily redacted, that is, the details about emergency response are blacked out. There is no mention that the Coast Guard in November testified to Congress that it did not have the capacity to respond to a spill. In fact the agreement was signed before public hearings on alternatives were completed.
Far more dangerous are winter ice which prevents any type of clean up and the currents that will always be there and widely disperse spills.
No mention is made that current inspections have repeatedly missed things like missing cladding and long sections of the pipeline undercut by currents and supported by nothing more than wishful thinking.
The study of alternatives has been improperly limited to the study of ways to keep Line 5 open, Enbridge has a long history of misleading and concealing informations, and has no inherit right to continue pumping oil under our Great Lakes.
I could go on, but why not go onto this website and voice your opposition to the pipeline. Today’s the last day and it’s as easy as signing in and saying that ‘Pipe Line is unsafe, Enbridge has a history of spills and deception and is putting at risk our precious waters for the sake of a 19th century fuel source” or your own words, like “Shut the line down NOW.” http://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/submit_your_line_5_comment?splash=1
Other questions:
These are four things opponents say; do they make you more or less likely to support (or oppose? ) Line 5:
Putting in more technology to find out sooner when line five 5 ruptures is not the same as protecting the great lakes.
The agreement has good steps but these are only band-aids.
Five Native American tribes oppose the line five bc doesn’t protect tribal fishing rights.
This was a back-room deal worked out between Governor Snyder and Enbridge.
