On July 1, 2014, a total of 17 conservation, water, environmental and tribal organizations sent a letter to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder urging immediate state action to regulate Enbridge’s Line 5 pipelines under the Straits of Mackinac. The letter cites several potential violations to the contract between the State of Michigan and Enbridge, and outlines the State's perpetual public trust authority to regulate this pipeline and protect the waters of the Great Lakes. This Citizen's Letter is a summary of the official letter sent to Governor Snyder.

Dear Governor Snyder:

An oil pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac is putting the Great Lakes at risk. Our state is allowing the pipeline to operate despite questions about whether Enbridge, the pipeline owner, is complying with the terms of its 1953 easement or laws to protect the Great Lakes.

We the undersigned urge you to make all information about the pipeline available to the public, and require that Enbridge immediately:

  • Share with the public and the State detailed information about the contents, use, and safety of the pipeline
  • Comply with all terms and conditions of the existing easement
  • File an authorization application under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act to secure state permission for activities on state-owned public trust bottomlands

I am not sure what our government is thinking putting some of the LAST LARGE BODIES OF FRESH WATER at risk like this. Greed has gone too far for big oil and they need to be stopped. Fragile ecosystems along with our own species is at risk pumping oil through here.

Close down #5! An oil spill would be disastorous to Michigan waters. It is irresponsible to continue using oil pipeline #5.

Please address this preventatively, rather then after disaster.

If Governor Snyder does not act now and a disaster occurs in the Great Lakes involving Line 5, he and the Republican party lose my support.

Enbridge needs to be forced to comply with terms of the law. By not doing so, we are inviting disaster. Nobody wants to swim or boat in oil slicks, not to mention the environmental impacts. Let’s do the right thing, rather than worrying about making the pockets of private industry fat.

The disruption in the eco-system, the water supply to hundreds of thousands, and not to mention how any spill could greatly affect the food supply and livelihood of the consumer and fishermen of great lakes !

How unbelievably lucky we are to live in a state surrounded by such powerful and beautiful waters. Undoubtedly, many of us take our Great Lakes for granted. If something catastrophic happens due to the unethical, irresponsible and greed-ridden actions of Enbridge, we will never be able to go back and heal our lakes. They will be forever changed. This company should not be able to continue utilizing this pipeline. It needs to be shut down permanently. Enbridge does not care anything about this natural resource, so the people of Michigan must step up and protect out inland seas from impending destruction.

Governor Snyder: 35-40 MILLION people count on the Great Lakes for clean drinking water. That means they’re counting on YOU to make sure that Enbridge doesn’t do to the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Huron what they did to Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River – the worst inland oil spill in US history! Need I point out that your responsibility to the people of the Great Lakes Region is MUCH more important than than whatever loyalty you feel for Enbridge?
