On July 1, 2014, a total of 17 conservation, water, environmental and tribal organizations sent a letter to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder urging immediate state action to regulate Enbridge’s Line 5 pipelines under the Straits of Mackinac. The letter cites several potential violations to the contract between the State of Michigan and Enbridge, and outlines the State's perpetual public trust authority to regulate this pipeline and protect the waters of the Great Lakes. This Citizen's Letter is a summary of the official letter sent to Governor Snyder.

Dear Governor Snyder:

An oil pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac is putting the Great Lakes at risk. Our state is allowing the pipeline to operate despite questions about whether Enbridge, the pipeline owner, is complying with the terms of its 1953 easement or laws to protect the Great Lakes.

We the undersigned urge you to make all information about the pipeline available to the public, and require that Enbridge immediately:

Share with the public and the State detailed information about the contents, use, and safety of the pipeline
Comply with all terms and conditions of the existing easement
File an authorization application under the Great Lakes Submerged Lands Act to secure state permission for activities on state-owned public trust bottomlands

Shut it down now. There is nothing more important than protecting these lakes. Nothing. Period. Not a billion dollars, not a billion jobs, and not even the entire economy of Michigan.

The delicate balance of the Great Lakes ecosystem should not be compromised by the inherent inadequacies of a submerged pipeline — let alone a 62 year submerged pipeline.

This is one of the most important issues we will ever address in this state. Why should the health and beauty of OUR Lakes be held hostage by a Canadian corporation whose only interest is short term profit??

Given time and neglect, all things made by man will fail. The question is not "if " this pipeline will fail, but “when”. It is already living on borrowed time with no plan to replace it or shut it down. To politically ignore this time bomb, as is occurring right now, is malfeasance of the highest order.

Two 62-year old oil pipelines threatens the Great lakes. Called Line 5, owned by Enbridge, a Canadian energy company, they carry 23 million gallons of crude oil daily. It passes between the state’s upper and lower peninsulas along the bottom of the Straits of Machinaw. Oil and water don’t mix and if it were to rupture it would spill oil across the Great Lakes. Please act now and make Enbridge replace the pipeline. Write a letter to the Governor and ask him to replace or shut down Line 5. Thank you

Just so you know I truly believe tar and feathers should be used for the kind of predictable outcome which will happen if we do nothing about this. It is just a matter of time. As our paid employee at the top this kind of thoughtless and cowardly behavior should land you in jail. Letting an aging pipeline not only carry on but carry more faster is beyond incompetent. You should be held accountable.
